What is renewable energy

Renewable energy is derived from essentially inexhaustible sources, such as the wind, sun, water or replaceable sources such crops. Easily accessible renewable energy technologies include solar water heating, solar photovoltaics, ground source heat pumps, small scale wind turbines, small scale hydro systems and biomass heating systems.

Why do I want a renewable energy supply?

  • Cost-effective
  • Generating your own energy will reduce and fix your costs.
  • Payback times for renewable technologies are lower now than ever before while electricity, gas and oil prices continue to increase. There has been a 250% rise in wholesale energy costs since 2003.
  • You could earn money by selling surplus energy back to the Grid.
  • Clean
  • Fossil fuels release greenhouse gases and other harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. They are the major cause of global climate change.
  • Sources of renewable energy can be harnessed without damaging the environment.
  • Continuous
  • There is a finite supply of fossil fuels.
  • Sources of renewable energy are continuously replenished and will not run out.

Renewable energy options

  • Using these technologies you can generate your own power
  • Examples below illustrate the order of savings and payback periods you could expect, but every site has its own unique conditions for renewable energy generation so needs to be assessed individually.
  • Renewable Energy technologies often last 20 years+ with minimum maintenance so pay for themselves well within their lifetimes
  • We can help you choose the most appropriate technologies for your needs

biomasBiomass boilers and stoves use wood-based and other natural resources for heating of domestic and larger buildings/groups of buildings and hot water systems.

ground_heat_pumpHeat pumps extract solar heat captured in the ground, water or air to provide heating for buildings. Ideal for underfloor heating systems.

hydroSmall scale hydro systems enable electricity to be generated from even a small stream or river using the latest technology.

windSmall scale wind turbines harness the power of the wind using a vertical or horizontal axis blades to generate electricity for a household or small business.

pvSolar photovoltaic (PV) panels use daylight to generate 30-100% of electricity needs. Suitable for urban and rural environments and ideal for off-grid locations.

solar_waterSolar water heating uses heat from the sun to supplement conventional water systems to provide up to 70% of annual hot water needs.
